Foundations of Imagery Interpretation Class
Build a stronger foundation for interpreting imagery in environmental work. This live, instructor-led class introduces the principles, visual clues and supporting information used to understand landscapes and develop clear, defensible interpretations.
Explore how aerial, satellite and drone imagery can reveal landscape patterns—and why those patterns need to be considered alongside terrain, soils, vegetation and hydrology.
The class covers:
- Imagery types, scale and resolution: Understand how imagery characteristics affect what you can identify and interpret.
- Visual clues and ecological context: Examine tone, texture, shape and pattern, and combine indicators rather than relying on a single clue.
- Tools and supporting data: Explore how GIS, elevation data, overlays and other spatial information support interpretation.
- Change over time: Compare imagery across seasons, years and disturbances to understand landscape changes.
- Defensible documentation: Record imagery sources, assumptions and decision rules, and communicate findings through maps, tables and reports.
