ABWRET-A Field Training Course
The ABWRET-A field training course provides hands-on instruction in assessing wetland waterflows, water quality, wildlife habitat, and human use functions.
Field Activities
Participants will evaluate wetland function indicators for three types of mineral-soil wetlands using the Alberta Wetland Rapid Evaluation Tool – Actual (ABWRET-A). Activities will include guided, group, and individual assessments, supported by a detailed field activity workbook.
Over 70 indicators will be discussed for each wetland, with practical tips and tricks for:
- Plant identification
- Catchment delineation
- Water behaviour in, through, and out of a waterbody
- Wildlife habitat quality
- Wetland Policy
Course Logistics
- Location: Calgary (3 wetlands within the City):
- Date: May 25, 2026
- Duration: Full-day field training course (8:30am to 5:30pm MST)
- Breaks: Bio- and travel-breaks between wetland locations
Pre-Course Preparation
Participants will receive the following materials prior to the field date:
- Site logistics package
- Field agenda
- Map pins to the parking areas
Participant Responsibilities
- Transportation (car-pooling is recommended)
- Food and water
- Pencil
- Appropriate field gear for rainy and cold weather
