Biophysical Bootcamp Field Course (S24)

 SALMTEC designed this course for participants to get their hands dirty, interact with multiple Subject Matter Experts, hone field skills, and benefit from cross-disciplinary learning. Course topics include:

  1. Grassland Vegetation Inventory (GVI) in the field,
  2. The Alberta Wetland Rapid Evaluation Tool – Actual (ABWRET-A),
  3. Field characterization of soil and terrain, and
  4. Plant identification.

Course Format

  • In-field training
  • Small groups
  • Four field stations
  • Workbooks provided

Course Logistics

  • A site logistics package will be provided
  • Students are responsible for their own tranportation
  • Students are responsible for bringing their own food
  • A trailer will be available with a washroom and water

Learning Objectives

  • Basics of plant identification, including wetland plants
  • Interpret imagery in the field
  • Interpret the landscape
  • Classify site types in the field
  • Songbird, raptor and mammal wetland function assessment using ABWRET-A
  • Characterize soil profiles
